The Swedish powerhouse just hit a massive wall in Milan and the local fans are losing their minds as Italy refuses to go away.
Nobody saw this coming. Sweden rolled into this game with a roster full of superstars and a massive chip on their shoulder. They were supposed to walk all over Italy. Instead, we have a dogfight.
Filip Gustavsson is the man in the hot seat right now. He's had a nightmare start between the pipes. You can't give up two goals on just three shots and expect to keep your job. The social media sharks are already circling.
The Swedish defense looks sleepy. Gabriel Landeskog tried to wake them up with a power-play goal at the nine-minute mark. Gustav Forsling even added another to make it 2-1. But the Italians have way more heart than anyone gave them credit for.
Luca Frigo stunned the building early on. Then Matt Bradley hammered home the equalizer early in the second period to make it 2-2. The building is shaking.
Dustin Gazley and Thomas Larkin are playing like men possessed. They're hunting pucks and winning battles in the dirty areas. Sweden looks shocked that they actually have to work for this one.
Erik Karlsson and Mika Zibanejad are getting their minutes but they aren't finishing. You can't let a team like Italy hang around this long. It's dangerous.
Gustavsson Is Leaking Oil In Net
The stats are ugly. Gustavsson is sitting there with a .333 save percentage. That isn't a typo. He's stopped one single shot. One.
Every time Italy throws a puck toward the net, the Swedish fans hold their breath. It’s a total meltdown in focus. You simply cannot win championships with a goalie who can't find the puck.
Italy is playing with house money now. They have nothing to lose and all the momentum. They're blocking shots and frustrating the Swedish stars at every turn.
Sweden needs to find another gear immediately. If they don't, this goes down as one of the biggest embarrassments in their international history. The pressure is suffocating.
Can Gustavsson make a save when it actually matters? He's lucky his shooters have bailed him out so far. But the leash is getting incredibly short.
The third period is going to be pure chaos. Italy smells blood in the water and they aren't backing down. Sweden is officially on upset alert.
