GM Bill Zito and the Florida Panthers are on the verge of a major decision on their roster just days ahead of the trade deadline.

Monday morning delivered a sobering update for the former Eastern Conference heavyweights. Expect major lineup changes very soon.
Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman shared a blunt assessment of the situation on his widely popular 32 Thoughts podcast.
The front office clearly banked on a massive post-Olympic surge to salvage their fading playoff hopes. They needed an immediate winning streak to stay alive.
That desperate push fell completely flat over the weekend. Florida dropped two of their first three games right out of the break.
Their offensive output simply vanished against beatable opponents. The defensive structure collapsed entirely in the third period.
Management is now forced to shift focus from a late wild-card push to immediate asset protection. The math just does not work in their favor anymore.
Friedman did not hold back when analyzing the internal decisions looming over the organization.
"The one thing I've been waiting for on Florida is do they wave the white flag and do guys shut down...I think they wanted to see, could they make a charge in a week."

Florida's quest for a three-peat is coming to an end

This assessment points to a drastic change in daily strategy. Banged-up veterans will likely head to the press box instead of grinding through lingering injuries.
Shutting down top-tier talent is never popular inside a competitive locker room. But the front office sees the harsh reality in the standings.
Pushing injured stars in meaningless games is terrible business for the franchise. The on-ice product has undeniably suffered lately, with the top unit power play looking entirely disconnected.
They struggled with injuries this season, but keeping core pieces out of the lineup ensures they are ready for training camp.
It is a remarkably bitter outcome for such a heavily invested roster. The NHL is an unforgiving league, and the Panthers are paying the ultimate price right now.
