Matthew Tkachuk buried a hat trick as the Florida Panthers beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1, and the season suddenly feels alive again.
Florida needed a jolt after four straight losses. Tkachuk delivered it with three very different goals and the kind of swagger that plays perfectly on Discover.
The Panthers leave Detroit at 31-29-3. That is not pretty, but it is still a pulse.
Tkachuk opened the scoring at 11:06 of the first period. He found space in the slot and ripped it past John Gibson before Detroit could sort coverage.
Detroit finally answered on a 5-on-3. Alex DeBrincat batted a bouncing puck out of the air to make it 1-1 and the building woke up.
Then the game flipped on special teams. Thirty-five seconds into the third, Tkachuk camped near the crease and tipped a Sam Reinhart blast on the man advantage for the 2-1 lead.
Sergei Bobrovsky made it hold up with 28 saves. That includes a calm, clean third period when Detroit pushed and Florida looked like itself again.
Matthew Tkachuk gives the Florida Panthers a heartbeat
Panthers fans have been tense for weeks, and you could feel the relief the moment that tip went in.
The empty-netter at 18:08 sealed the hat trick. It was simple, ruthless, and exactly what a closer does.
It was also his sixth career hat trick, and his first this season. Big nights from your biggest star change the vibe fast.
Tkachuk's edge showed up in the details, not just the finish. Florida finally won net-front battles and turned rebounds into time in the offensive zone.
The Red Wings had their own scare late when Dylan Larkin went down awkwardly. Detroit did not look the same after that moment.
Now comes the immediate test. The teams run it back in Florida on Tuesday, and Detroit will be hunting payback.
If the Panthers get another full-throttle game from Tkachuk, the «lost season» talk can stay quiet a little longer.
