Paul Maurice liked Matthew Tkachuk contact work Wednesday, and the Florida Panthers feel closer to getting their edge back Thursday.

Maurice told reporters he was happy with how much contact Tkachuk handled in practice, twisting, bumping, and absorbing little collisions. That is not a cute detail, it is the whole checkpoint.
The coach also framed it the right way, today is only half the story, tomorrow is the verdict. In these rehab ramps, the next-day response matters as much as the reps.
Paul Maurice sounded encouraged after practice, especially with how much contact Matthew Tkachuk was able to handle in the flow of drills. Maurice said he liked how much contact Tkachuk was able to take in today's practice, with plenty of twisting, bumping, and other real-game friction mixed in.
'It'll be a good test for him today to see how he recovers tomorrow.'' Maurice said.
That next-day check is the real barometer, because a player can look fine in the moment, but the body always tells the truth after the adrenaline fades.
Even before the jersey color changes and the medical green lights, the Panthers already know what they are waiting on. Tkachuk is 28, drafted sixth overall by the Calgary Flames in 2016, and he plays every shift like a personal argument.

I just want to see him take one hard bump, pop up, and smile like he owns the place again.
Matthew Tkachuk's return would ripple through the Florida Panthers well beyond whatever line he lands on. On the ice, he changes matchups instantly, he forces defenders to collapse, wins pucks on the walls, and turns the crease into a problem every shift, which frees up space and confidence for his linemates.
Off the ice, he brings a loud, competitive pulse that teammates feed off, the kind of presence that keeps a room sharp on long trips and stops a team from getting comfortable after a good week.
Even in travel moments, early flights, back-to-backs, and those sleepy hotel days, having a leader who pulls guys into the fight can tighten the group and keep the organization aligned from the coaches down to the depth players who follow the energy.
Thursday becomes the key day, because swelling, stiffness, or fatigue can change the plan fast. Maurice won't circle a return day on the calendar, he's watching the checkpoints and reacting to what he sees.
Tkachuk is also carrying a $9.5 million cap hit, so the stakes are massive for Florida's lineup and for every opponent scouting their next matchup. If he wakes up feeling good Thursday, the next milestone finally feels real.
