Aleksander Barkov might be completely shut down for the year as Florida Panthers General Manager Bill Zito navigates a massive salary cap dilemma.

The grueling NHL regular season is completely unforgiving, and injuries have absolutely decimated the defending back-to-back Stanley Cup champions.
The undisputed captain suffered a devastating torn ACL and MCL back in September. Losing your main offensive engine for an entire year is an absolute nightmare for any locker room.
With only 25 games remaining on the schedule, the Panthers currently sit eight points out of a wildcard spot. They desperately lack crisp passing and solid execution deep in the offensive zone without their leader.
Now, management is officially facing a brutal reality check ahead of the rapidly approaching trade deadline on March 6th.
Because of strict new playoff salary cap rules, Florida cannot simply stash his massive $10 million cap hit on standard long-term injured reserve and magically activate him for the postseason.

Panthers forced to make a move with Barkov

To actually utilize that crucial financial relief to acquire healthy bodies right now, they must officially place him on Season Ending LTIR. That specific transaction makes him completely ineligible to return for the remainder of the year, including the playoffs.
Zito recently addressed the media and openly admitted that shutting down their three-time Selke Trophy winner is a very real scenario if the team falls further out of the demanding Eastern Conference playoff picture.
The elite center has been skating individually for roughly two months, but his original recovery timeline was slated for seven to nine months.
Florida desperately misses his controlled entries and elite transition game pushing the pace. He single-handedly forces opposing defensemen to heavily back off the blue line every single shift.
Over his NHL career, the Finnish superstar has proven his unmatched value as a 200-foot dominant force. But rushing him back into a lost season is an incredibly dangerous gamble.
Expect the front office to make an official, season-defining move in the coming days as the deadline clock continues to actively tick. The entire league is watching.
