The Florida Panthers and head coach Paul Maurice are getting massive reinforcements to help Matthew Tkachuk as the stretch drive intensifies.
Brad Marchand and Tkachuk recently returned from the grueling 2026 Winter Olympics. Now, the focus shifts entirely back to the NHL playoff race.
Florida is facing a steep climb in the Eastern Conference standings. The defending champions have struggled to find consistency and currently sit outside the playoff picture.
Help is finally on the way. Two veteran Stanley Cup champions are officially shedding their non-contact jerseys at the training facility.
Defenseman Dmitry Kulikov and forward Tomas Nosek are taking regular reps. This is a massive development ahead of Thursday's critical Atlantic Division clash with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The blue line has missed Kulikov all season. The 35-year-old veteran sustained a torn labrum in just his second game of the year, forcing him onto long-term injured reserve after surgery.
Nosek's absence has been equally noticeable. He has yet to suit up for the 2025-26 campaign following summer knee surgery, with his last appearance coming in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final.
Florida Adding Vital Depth for Playoff Push
The timing could not be better for Maurice. Florida desperately needs all hands on deck to string together a winning streak and salvage the 82-game season.
Adding Kulikov back to the defensive pairings provides immediate stability. His physical, heavy-hitting style makes the front of the net a miserable place for opposing forwards.
Nosek brings a different element as a trusted bottom-six forward. He is highly efficient at the faceoff dot and provides a steady presence for a penalty kill unit looking for traction.
Maurice will be incredibly cautious with both players. Jumping back into an NHL lineup after months of rehabilitation is a massive hurdle, even for seasoned veterans.
Practice reps are a completely different beast than actual game action. Opponents will immediately test their speed and durability along the boards.
Tkachuk and Marchand have been shouldering the offensive load under heavy pressure. Having two reliable depth pieces back on the active 23-man roster will allow the top lines to breathe.
The front office hopes this injects new life into a stalling locker room. Getting two champions back on the ice might be the exact spark the Panthers need to go on a deep spring run.
