The Florida Panthers are entering the post-Olympic stretch in survival mode, and Bill Zito might be looking at a familiar face to save the season.
With the blue line decimated by injuries, a reunion with Calgary Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar is reportedly back on the table.
Florida’s defensive structure took a devastating hit when Seth Jones went down with a collarbone injury during the Winter Classic. While Jones is nearing a return to practice in a non-contact jersey, his timeline for game action remains uncertain.
The Panthers have struggled with a rotating cast on the back end, and the lack of a reliable transition game has been a glaring weakness. Bringing back a player who understands the system could be the missing piece.
Calgary is currently in a position where they have to listen to every offer that comes across the desk. The Flames have regressed significantly, and general manager Craig Conroy is under pressure to recoup assets for the future.

Weegar has five years remaining on his contract at an affordable $6.25 million AAV. While he has a full no-trade clause, a return to the team that drafted him and won back-to-back Cups might be enough to waive it.
Florida Panthers homecoming in the cards?
Over his NHL career, Weegar has proven he can eat heavy minutes in all situations. He currently leads the Flames in ice time, averaging over 23 minutes per game.
Zito has never been afraid to move aggressively before the deadline. Replacing the offensive output lost with Jones on the shelf is a priority if the Panthers want to secure a playoff spot.
The Flames are looking for a massive return that includes high-end picks and prospects. They aren't in a rush to sell low, but they are clearly open for business.
The Panthers' roster has been built on grit and 200-foot play, two hallmarks of Weegar’s game. His familiarity with the core group would make for a crisp, efficient transition during the most critical part of the year.
If Zito can find a way to navigate the cap, this reunion would immediately stabilize a top-four unit that has looked fragile. The next 12 days will determine if the former fan favorite returns to Sunrise.
