Aleksander Barkov practiced Tuesday, said his rehab is on schedule, and Florida Panthers fans are praying their captain is back when the playoffs actually matter.

Barkov told team media he's «in good hands,» and the tone sounded confident, not desperate.
That matters, because this is not just any return, it's the heartbeat of Florida's lineup.
Reports out of the skate had Barkov back on the ice, which is the kind of sign fans have been waiting for.
It doesn't guarantee he's ready for contact or game pace, but it keeps the door open.
Here's the postgame clip that kicked off the optimism.
The Panthers need every bit of that optimism, because the standings are not being kind right now.
Florida is 29-25-3, and the cushion for a slow ramp-up basically doesn't exist anymore.

Aleksander Barkov could save Florida Panthers season

Panthers fans feel stuck between hope and frustration, because you can see the path to a run, but you can also see how fast the clock is moving.
The schedule is a grind, and every night without Barkov in full uniform raises the stress level.
Florida's last game was a 6-1 loss to Tampa Bay, the kind of result that makes the «must-win» talk feel very real.
That's why the Barkov timeline keeps circling back to one phrase, be healthy for the games that count the most.
If he's trending toward a playoff return, that changes how you manage the rest of the regular season.
It also changes the room, because Barkov is the quiet standard setter, the guy who calms bad shifts and pulls teammates back into structure.
Even if he's not piling up points, his two-way detail makes Florida's top-six harder to play against and makes the forecheck look organized.
The brutal part is the Panthers still have to earn the invite, and there's no easy segment left to steal points.
So Tuesday's practice was encouraging, but it's only step one, the real story is whether Florida can stay alive long enough to see No. 16 back when it matters most.
