The Florida Panthers received a massive boost Tuesday as star defenseman Seth Jones was spotted back on the ice for the first time since his Winter Classic injury.

Jones, who was named to the 2026 U.S. Olympic roster just hours before getting hurt, has been sidelined with an upper-body injury since January 2.
Head coach Paul Maurice confirmed that while Jones skated early, the veteran blueliner is finally trending toward a return to the active roster.

Florida has struggled immensely without its top-pair anchor, enduring a season defined by 225 man-games lost to various injuries.
Before the layoff, Jones was a workhorse for the Cats, recording 6 goals and 24 points while averaging over 23 minutes of ice time. His presence on the power play has been sorely missed, especially as the team fights to bridge an eight-point gap in the playoff race.

The timing couldn't be better for a Florida squad that has spent the majority of the season playing without its full complement of stars.
While Aleksander Barkov is also nearing a return from his own long-term absence, getting a 23-minute-per-night player like Jones back is vital.
Management expects the 31-year-old to reclaim his spot on the top pairing alongside Niko Mikkola, stabilizing a defensive unit that has been overtaxed.
The Panthers have leaned heavily on Gustav Forsling and Aaron Ekblad, but the return of Jones allows the lineup to return to its natural balance.
Over his career, Jones has been the definition of a minute-muncher, and his puck-moving ability is essential for the Panthers' transition game.
Florida is scheduled to face Toronto at home this Thursday, and while that might be too soon for a full return, the progress is undeniable.
The Cats have managed to stay in the hunt despite the attrition, and a healthy Jones is exactly what's needed for a late-season surge.
