The future of Sergei Bobrovsky remains the biggest storyline in Sunrise, especially after Matthew Tkachuk and Paul Maurice watched their veteran netminder shut the door on Detroit last night.
Rumors swirled for weeks that Bill Zito might move the two-time Stanley Cup winner before the trade deadline.
The Panthers ultimately held steady, but the shadow of unrestricted free agency still looms large over the locker room.
Sergei Bobrovsky is currently playing out the final year of his massive seven-year deal. While his .876 save percentage this season represents a career low, his importance to the roster transcends the box score.
Tkachuk convincing Bob to stay
Following a gritty 3-1 win over the Red Wings on Friday, Matthew Tkachuk made it clear he isn't ready to say goodbye. The superstar forward told the media the boys are ready to pull out all the stops to keep "Bob" in Florida.
"We're all going to wine and dine him if it gets closer to a decision," Tkachuk said.
He noted that all 20 guys in the room are prepared to lobby management to ensure the veteran stays put.
The loyalty from the players stems from the hardware. Sergei Bobrovsky was the primary reason Florida secured back-to-back rings, and the locker room hasn't forgotten those heroics despite a difficult 2025-26 campaign.
Florida currently sits eight points out of a wild-card spot with 19 games remaining. It has been a season defined by inconsistency, but a 27-save performance against Detroit proved the veteran still has some "Big Game Bob" left in the tank.
Career-wise, the 37-year-old has nothing left to prove. However, the Panthers' internal belief is that he is the only man for the job as they try to salvage their season and build for next October.
Tkachuk emphasized that the team needs him for more than just his play on the ice. He called the goaltender "one of the best guys in the world," citing his work ethic and presence as a vital cultural pillar.
Whether a team-friendly extension is in the cards remains to be seen. For now, the players are making their voices heard: they want their backbone to stay in South Florida.
