Sergei Bobrovsky trade rumors around the Florida Panthers just got a reality check from Paul Maurice, and the room finally sounds done with the noise.
Maurice didn't dance around it. He framed the whole thing as an outside story that caught fire, not an internal plan.
He said he thinks somebody in Canada decided Bobrovsky was a good target, and it blew up for about two weeks.
That tone matters, because Florida has been sliding and the rumor mill always looks for a star name to feed on.
The Panthers are 30-29-3, and that is not where a two-time defending Cup winner expects to sit in early March.
Bobrovsky's personal line is rough too, 22-19-1 with a 3.13 goals-against average and an .873 save percentage.
That combo is basically an open invitation for talk radio and deadline speculators to go wild.
Sergei Bobrovsky rumors test the Florida Panthers again
Panthers fans are tired, because it feels like every stumble turns into a «blow it up» conversation instead of a hockey conversation.
Here's the part that makes the idea messy, Bobrovsky carries a $10 million cap hit and his deal expires after this season, with UFA status looming.
If you are trading that, you are either eating money or taking a contract back, and contenders usually hate both options.
Even the league buzz has sounded skeptical. One report noted many around the NHL doubt Bobrovsky actually gets moved, partly because the goalie market has been quiet.
So Maurice's message reads like a fence around the crease. He's telling everyone the bigger story was outside the building.
On the ice, Florida still has a path, but it needs steadier nights between the pipes and fewer early leaks that kill the bench.
Tactically, the Panthers also need cleaner exits, because odd-man rushes are turning every goal against into a debate about goaltending.
If Florida keeps losing, the rumors will come back, because that is how Deadline Day works.
But if Bobrovsky gives them one strong week, this whole saga fades fast, and the next game becomes the only headline that matters.
