A.J. Greer trade rumors are heating up for the Florida Panthers, and the March 6 NHL trade deadline could break up a perfect depth fit.
The buzz starts with one simple idea, contenders always pay for bite, pace, and fearlessness in a seven-game grind. Greer checks those boxes without needing power-play minutes.
An analyst on the DFO Rundown, Jason Gregor, specifically floated Greer as a name that could pull real interest. He even framed it as Florida deciding how many «heavy» forwards it wants to keep.
Greer's on-ice case is clean. He's sitting at 11-10-21 this season, and he's been on the right side of the ledger at +7.
The other selling point is loud. Greer has already piled up 145 hits, and that number jumps off the page for a fourth-line winger.
The timing is brutal for Florida fans because the Panthers are wobbling. They're 29-25-3 and chasing ground in the East, which forces tough «sell a piece» conversations.
Cap math is the part nobody likes talking about, but it matters here. Greer's cap hit is $850,000 and he's a pending UFA after this season.
A.J. Greer puts the Florida Panthers in a bind
If you're a Panthers fan, this is the exact kind of rumor that makes you mad because it's logical. Greer is the guy you win small playoff moments with.
So if Florida moves anyone from that role, Greer is the cleanest expiring deal to cash in. That doesn't mean they want to, it means the market might push them there.
The «buyer» pitch is easy to picture. A rival plugs Greer into a fourth line, lets him crash the forecheck, and suddenly their bench has more push.
For Florida, the counterargument is just as real. He's not a luxury player when your lineup is banged up and your identity is built on edge.
That's why this feels like a true deadline coin flip. If Bill Zito thinks there's a late run, Greer stays and you live with the contract risk.
If the standings don't move fast, his value might never be higher than it is right now, one week out.
Either way, Thursday night and the next couple games are going to feel like an audition for everyone watching.
