When the Florida Panthers re-signed Brad Marchand to a six-year, $31.5 million contract during the 2025 NHL offseason, the reaction around the league was mixed.

Marchand was 37 years old. Six years felt long. Even with a team-friendly $5.25 million average annual value, there were fair questions about how much elite hockey was left in the former Boston Bruins captain.
So far, those questions have been answered decisively.
Marchand hasn't just held his own in Florida - he's thriving. Through 35 games this season, the veteran winger has piled up 41 points, scoring 20 goals and adding 21 assists. Those numbers put him firmly among the Panthers' offensive leaders and firmly back in star territory league-wide.
Even more impressive is how he's trending. Over his last six games, Marchand has recorded four goals and 10 points, showing no signs of slowing down as the season rolls on. His pace, energy, and edge have all translated seamlessly into Florida's system, and he continues to be a driver rather than a passenger.
If this production holds, Marchand is on track for his first point-per-game season since 2021-22 - a remarkable feat given his age and mileage. Instead of fading, he looks rejuvenated, benefiting from a deep roster, a structured system, and meaningful minutes in all situations.
For the Panthers, the contract already looks like a masterstroke. A modest cap hit for a proven playoff performer, leader, and elite competitor fits perfectly with Florida's championship window. Marchand's experience and intensity have added another layer to a team that already knows how to win.
On the flip side, it's hard not to notice the absence in Boston. The Bruins are missing Marchand's edge, scoring touch, and leadership - all of which he's now providing in Sunrise.
At 37, Brad Marchand was supposed to be slowing down. Instead, he's reminding the league that age is just a number - especially when paired with hockey IQ, competitiveness, and a winning environment.
If this is what the early years of that six-year deal look like, Florida fans have plenty to be excited about.
