Luke Kunin is heading down to the Charlotte Checkers after head coach Paul Maurice and the Florida Panthers made a tough roster decision Monday.

It's a brutal break for a hardworking forward who finally looked comfortable competing under heavy pressure.
Florida is navigating a complicated cap squeeze while trying to maintain depth for a deep playoff run.
They boast an incredibly crowded bottom-six forward group loaded with seasoned veterans. That leaves almost zero room for internal promotions, even when a guy earns his keep.
The front office simply had to clear an active roster spot and shed daily salary to stay compliant. Managing the books in a hard-cap league forces these ugly demotions.
Kunin ends up being the unfortunate casualty of a pure numbers game.
He flashed solid execution on the forecheck and generated quality chances during his brief window with the big club. His transition game looked crisp when navigating the aggressive physical play in the neutral zone.

A Harsh Reality In Sunrise

The Panthers are built to win a Stanley Cup right now. They lean heavily on their experienced core to drive offensive output.
Maurice knows there are not enough leftover minutes available to give a promising skater the ice time required to truly elevate his game.
Skating barely nine minutes a night on the fourth line doesn't help his long-term developmental trajectory. A player with his raw tools needs to be on the ice.
And sitting on the bench during a critical penalty kill or a tight third period stalls a prospect trying to build real momentum.
He needs consistent top-line repetitions to keep his scoring touch sharp. Charlotte offers him a legitimate opportunity to run the top power play unit and log massive minutes every single weekend.
But it still stings when you taste the Show, do exactly what the coaching staff asks, and get sent packing anyway. He was rarely out of position and proved he can handle the heavy Eastern Conference style.
Expect him to tear up the AHL ranks and produce steady numbers. The grueling schedule guarantees another injury will eventually force Florida to bring him right back up.
