Paul Maurice refused to relive the goalie interference call, and the Florida Panthers looked like a team running out of patience.
The moment landed like a punch, because it flipped a one-goal game into a «here we go again» finish for Florida.
Maurice kept it short in his media scrum and basically waved the question away.
He said, «I think, Tarasov, gave you probably the best answer, just write what he said,» according to Alex Baumgartner.
That line tells you everything about the temperature around the room.
Daniil Tarasov's comment could quickly become controversial because it takes direct aim at the NHL's «situation room» in Toronto.
By saying, «I don't know what these guys are smoking there,» he's not just disagreeing with a specific non-goalie interference decision; he's questioning the competence and judgment of the league's central review officials.
That kind of public criticism can potentially draw a response from the NHL, since it suggests the system meant to ensure accuracy is actually contributing to frustration and confusion.
When your coach points to the goalie for the «best answer,» it usually means the goalie just ate the hardest questions.
It also means the bench feels the call was a turning point, whether the league agrees or not.
Paul Maurice and Florida Panthers feel the pressure rise
Panthers fans are tired of the same heartbreak, one review, one bounce, and the whole night slips through their fingers.
The tactical piece is simple, Florida has to protect the crease better so the video room doesn't even get tempted.
Net-front chaos is great when you're screening, but it's brutal when the other team gets a whistle-friendly look.
If Tarasov is seeing traffic and contact every night, the Panthers are gambling with results and with emotions.
This is where a veteran coach goes quiet on purpose, because saying the wrong thing becomes the story.
Florida doesn't need another story, it needs points, and it needs them fast.
