Matthew Tkachuk got an alternate captain letter for Team USA in Milan, and the Olympic gold pressure just got louder.

Team USA confirmed the move Sunday as the leadership group took shape in Italy. Auston Matthews wears the “C,” with Charlie McAvoy and Tkachuk as alternates.
This isn’t a popularity contest. It’s Team USA picking the guys who can keep a bench sharp when the legs go.
Tkachuk’s case is simple. He drags games into his kind of hockey, loud around the crease and miserable on the walls.
He also brings recent proof. Florida just repeated as Stanley Cup champions, and Tkachuk’s edge has been central to their identity.
The timing matters too. Tkachuk missed time after surgery in late August, then returned in January and still forced his way right back into impact shifts.
His 2025-26 stat line is small because the sample is small, 3-5-8 in 10 games. The bite is already there anyway.

Matthew Tkachuk gives Team USA its emotional engine

You can feel the American mood here, confident on paper, nervous in the gut, because anything but gold will sting.
Tkachuk helps solve that. He creates energy without needing a goal, and that’s priceless in a short tournament.
He’s also the guy who pulls teammates into the fight. If the game gets tight, he’s usually the first one to make it uncomfortable for the other side.
That pairs well with Matthews as captain. Matthews drives the offense and the pace, while Tkachuk drives the temperature.
McAvoy rounds it out by setting the standard on the blue line. A leadership trio across forward and defense keeps the room balanced.
Now it turns into deployment. Tkachuk can play top-six minutes, live net-front on the man advantage, or be the matchup wrecking ball when Team USA wants to tilt momentum.
Team USA’s opener is Thursday against Latvia, so there’s no warm-up period. This group has to snap into tournament mode immediately.
If Tkachuk is healthy, the “A” isn’t a headline, it’s a warning. Team USA wants games played on their terms, and he’s the guy who enforces that.
