The Florida Panthers Winter Classic is no longer an idea or a graphic, it's officially being built inside loanDepot park.

On Wednesday, the first visible step toward the 2026 Winter Classic took place as crews began installing the ice rink at the Miami ballpark. With 16 days remaining before puck drop, the transformation from baseball stadium to outdoor hockey venue is underway.
Florida will host its first Winter Classic and headline the southernmost outdoor game in NHL history, welcoming the New York Rangers to a stage unlike any the league has attempted before. Seeing boards and refrigeration equipment inside the park makes the moment tangible.
The NHL has spent months preparing for the unique climate challenges. Ice quality, humidity control, and temperature swings are all magnified in South Florida, and the league's confidence in executing this event speaks to how far the Panthers market has come.
There's also a symbolic layer. Outdoor games are usually reserved for traditional cold-weather markets, but Florida's rise as a contender has earned them this spotlight. For a franchise once fighting for relevance, hosting a Winter Classic is validation.

Florida Panthers Winter Classic countdown accelerates

On the ice, outdoor games tend to reward simplicity. Dump-ins matter, forechecks get heavier, and odd bounces can flip momentum quickly. Florida's identity fits that style, with layered pressure and a willingness to grind shifts down low.
The Rangers will bring a strong traveling presence, which adds another wrinkle. Florida won't have a quiet home environment, but they will have familiarity with the surface and surroundings, something that can matter early in these games.
Beyond the sixty minutes, this is a showcase moment for the franchise. National eyes, casual fans, and skeptics will all tune in. The Panthers have an opportunity to present themselves as a finished product, not just a warm-weather novelty.

With the ice going in, the countdown feels real. Miami is about to host hockey's biggest regular-season stage, and the Panthers are at the center of it.
