Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice reached his boiling point Friday night after a controversial non-call involving goaltender Daniil Tarasov.
The Buffalo Sabres were in town for what was supposed to be a standard Atlantic Division matchup. Both teams needed points in a tight playoff race.
Tensions were already running high inside the building long before the controversial whistle. The checking was heavy and both shorthanded units were busy early.
Then came the chaotic sequence that sent the veteran bench boss completely over the edge.
A Sabres forward cut his way towards the crease with his stick out and forward trying to tip home a point shot.
Replays showed unmistakable contact directly with Tarasov's glove. The contact took Tarasov's glove out of position, allowing the puck to sneak by.
A Baffling Decision
Maurice immediately threw his arms up and demanded a coach's challenge. He had the iPad out on the bench within seconds.
The entire building expected the goal to be wiped off the board. It looked like a textbook goalie interference penalty.
The officials went over to the penalty box monitors for a lengthy review. The delay only added to the anxiety inside the arena.
When the referee announced the call on the ice stood, Maurice was visibly irate. His reaction said everything about the standard of officiating.
He tossed his head back in pure disbelief, shouting toward the ice. The frustration was impossible to hide on the national broadcast.
That single non-call completely shifted the momentum of the hockey game against the Panthers. They struggled to regain their footing after the minor penalty for the failed challenge.
The goal proved to be the difference as well, as the Panthers lost 3-2 to the Sabres when all was said and done. Talk about a costly mistake.
This is exactly the type of inconsistency from the Situation Room that drives general managers crazy. You simply cannot allow contact in the blue paint.
