Head coach Paul Maurice confirms veteran forward Dmitry Kulikov is officially a game-time decision tonight, and it's safe to say the Florida Panthers could use him.
The injury occurred back in October and completely derailed his season early on. It was a severe upper-body issue that immediately required complex surgery to repair.
Medical staff initially handed down a brutal recovery timeline. He was strictly ruled out for five full months and sent into a gruelling, isolated rehabilitation process.
The Panthers have navigated a rigorous schedule without one of their most experienced voices. Missing that kind of battle-tested veteran leadership in the locker room takes a quiet toll on a contending roster.
You simply cannot replicate that specific brand of heavy physicality. His extended absence forced younger guys into playing heavier minutes during critical stretches of the regular season.
Now, the long wait is finally wrapping up in Sunrise. He has been skating hard in practice and looks absolutely ready to jump back into the fire.
A much needed boost for the Florida Panthers
Getting a fresh, highly motivated player back for the stretch run is a massive development. The Panthers need solid execution and crisp passing as they prepare for a brutal homestand.
Kulikov is a game-time decision, per Maurice.
Taking the warmup skate will strictly dictate his exact status for the opening faceoff tonight. If the medical staff clears him, he instantly changes the entire dynamic of the bottom six.
Maurice has been constantly juggling his forward combinations looking for a consistent spark. Sliding a fully healthy body into the lineup provides immediate relief for a visibly fatigued group.
However, rushing any player back from major upper-body surgery is always an inherent risk. The training staff has been extremely cautious with his physical progression over the last three weeks.
But the designated five-month mark has officially arrived. He put in the quiet, agonizing work away from the spotlight just to get his body right for this exact moment.
Expect a highly intense evaluation from the trainers immediately following the pre-game skate. If everything feels normal, he will be taking regular shifts when the puck drops tonight.
