Sergei Bobrovsky is struggling heavily, but Paul Maurice and the Florida Panthers are apparently doubling down on their veteran goaltender.
Reports surfaced Tuesday morning suggesting a rather shocking contract extension is currently in the works down in Sunrise for the aging star.
Multiple sources indicate that Bobrovsky will likely sign a brand new two-year deal with the Panthers once the offseason officially begins.
This developing front office storyline comes as a massive surprise to anyone watching the crease dynamics closely throughout this highly anticipated regular season.
The 37-year-old Russian netminder is currently enduring one of the absolute toughest statistical campaigns of his entire decorated professional hockey career.
Through 42 appearances this season, he sports a highly concerning .872 save percentage that ranks near the absolute bottom of the league.
He is fighting the puck on a nightly basis, bleeding bad goals from the perimeter while carrying a bloated 3.13 goals-against average on a contending roster.
Betting On Past Playoff Glory
Father Time remains completely undefeated in professional sports, and the physical signs of athletic decline are flashing bright red right now.
His lateral movement across the blue paint looks slightly compromised, and the explosive reaction time that once made him a superstar has noticeably faded.
Yet, the front office seems perfectly content rolling the dice on his undeniable locker room leadership and heavily established legacy.
You simply cannot ignore what he accomplished during those grueling, deep Stanley Cup playoff runs over the last few springs.
He posted an outstanding .915 save percentage during the 2023-24 run, essentially securing his permanent status as a beloved franchise legend and an absolute fan favorite in South Florida.
But paying premium dollars and term for past performance is always a highly dangerous game to play in a strict hard-cap league.
Handing a guaranteed two-year commitment to a goaltender approaching his 40th birthday is an enormous gamble. Management is betting the house that this slump is just an ugly blip, rather than his new permanent reality between the pipes.
