The Florida Panthers lost their minds late in the second period when Simon Benoit leveled Sam Reinhart, sending head coach Paul Maurice into an absolute rage.

The Maple Leafs defenseman caught Reinhart from an odd angle, stepped up hard and delivered a thunderous blow. The sheer impact echoed throughout the entire arena.
Reinhart went down awkwardly onto the ice and stayed there for a moment. His teammates wasted zero time and immediately swarmed Benoit in defense of their star.
The whistle blew with exactly 1:11 remaining in the middle frame. Complete chaos ensued along the half-wall as every skater on the ice engaged in the pile.
Gloves were quickly dropped and jerseys were forcefully grabbed. The officials eventually stepped in and handed out multiple roughing calls just to settle the escalating dust.
Florida clearly felt the initial contact was unnecessarily high and highly predatory. They viewed the collision as a blatant blindside hit on their most important piece.
Benoit has long built a reputation on playing heavy defensive minutes in his own end. He brings over 150 hits to the table this season, constantly playing right on the absolute edge.

A Boiling Point

Maurice was visibly livid as he barked at the officials from behind the bench. You could easily read his furious complaints from the upper deck.
You simply do not take uncalled liberties with a franchise player carrying 38 goals. Reinhart routinely dictates the entire offensive output for the Panthers on a nightly basis.
Toronto absolutely refused to back down from the physical challenge. They desperately needed an aggressive spark on this tough road trip, and Benoit provided exactly that kind of energy.
The resulting penalty situation forced both special teams units into an absolute grinder. The penalty kill squads had to lock down the ice to prevent the game from slipping away.
These Atlantic Division matchups always carry a heavy dose of lingering bad blood. Tonight just poured a massive bucket of gasoline on an already burning fire between these two rosters.
The third period promises to be a total war of attrition. Florida will undoubtedly be looking for swift retribution on every single shift moving forward.
The Maple Leafs must keep their heads on a swivel as the clock winds down. The physical toll of this heated matchup is clearly far from over.
This is exactly what playoff-style hockey looks like in the late winter. Expect plenty more fireworks before the final horn finally sounds.
